Hi.

Had an interesting time trying to find a group at the Temple of Ages earlier.

Now, I am a Mesmer Primarily, and I love the profession. my secondary is Warrior, which makes for a pretty odd combo, especially the way I play. I am Illusion/Weapon/Inspiration/FastCasting, and I primarly use Melee with Illusion spell support. I've gotten it worked out to the point where I can hold my own in Melee, but I am still unlocking skills and perfecting my play.

But still, I have a funny build and playstyle.

I've gotten used to spending upwards of a half-hour trying to find a group and seeing no invites while everyone spams/begs for a Monk. That's a drawback of my profession choices, and I'm willing to accept that. I've also gotten used to players disregarding the secondary profession entirely, as if the secondary profession is completely unusable.

While I am still relatively inexperienced at the game compared to most of the playerbase, I've been through Fissure of Woe multiple times in PuGs, playing in both the Melee/Hybrid AND the Pure Caster modes, and assuming many various roles such as Tank, Hybrid Damage, Interrupter, Energy Denial, Shutdown(as much as is possible without Domination), etc. I use as much of both sides of my Character as I can, so as to be as flexible as possible for any group I join.

now my issue is, I can't ever get a group for Underworld. I've only been once. I have always wondered why I could never get a group for UW, and today it hit me.

Someone advertised a UW group, and i sent them a whisper and invited myself(as was apparently the procedure for this group), and proceeded to be ignored for a good 5 minutes or so, while they continued to request players for the group. I whispered again, asking whether or not they could use a Mesmer. I was told "Not in Underworld. If it were Fissure, I'd love for you to come. But not in Underworld." I could only assume that I got this answer because of my Primary Class.

so my question is..What is it about Underworld that makes Mesmers so undesirable? I've only been there once, briefly, so I don't know. Why is it that I can normally find a good Fissure group after a bit of advertising, but if I actively look to find an Underworld group, I get stonewalled(as in not even responded to)??

Most people who go to UW simply want a smite run. Now I'm not sure what exactly this guy advertised since you didn't rely it, but in my experience no one really goes to the UW for questing. People who go to the UW want undermanned groups (usually 3, 4 or 5) just to kill all the aatxes and smites. Full varied groups don't fit with that purpose. Mobs and situations in the FoW are much more diverse. Mobs there have a good mix of melee, ranged, and casters. UW mobs tend to be rather uniform in their approach.

Many people are simple minded and ignorant.

The underworld is easier with AoE.

Try Me/E
Get a few fire or earth AoE skills (but chaos storm is just as good) , maelstorm, Echo, arcane echo and glyph of lesser energy (also use echo on the glyph), energy tap, cry of frustration, and a defensive stance. -> you can cast 2 maelstorms (or any other 25 energy skill) and a firestorm, or 3 firestorms, or energy tap a lot or other funny combos faster than any elementalist and not really weaker.
Sell self as smither (sad truth: most people wont understand more complex words).
See people being impressed by them killing large groups in 2 seconds (but of course that was you).

I'm not sure what the intended party make-up was of that group you tried to get into but they OBVIOUS don't realize how well a Mesmer can make taking Ataxe's down......EASY.
See they have a constant health regen and a powerful Mesmer can not only negate that effect but literally have the health degen'ing rapidly. Granted the domination side wouldn't be AS useful in UW because the few casters you run into on typical UW runs....aren't as bothersome as say the Hydra's in Fissue(meteor shower, inferno,fireball,meteor etc.). An Inspiration/Illusion Mes would be GREAT in UW.

Most people are completely ignorant that Mesmers can do anything other than Dominate shutdown, which isn't all that useful in the first part of the UW (it's moderately useful for an UW quest group). What you'll likely have to do is form your own group for the UW, show off your ability to rule down there, and even then the Monks and Elementalists will be getting all the credit.

In happy news, most PUG groups are utter failures, anyway, and you don't want to group with them, especially in the UW. Build a solid friends list out of people who have impressed you and tailor your own group. It's usually how my Mesmer functions.
